A decent and clean chicken coop is essential for the health of a chicken. Hen Fleas are a major health concern for many farmers: once infected the chickens will become restless and show agitation. This discomfort will make a broody hen so stressed that she may actually break her eggs.

Fleas are often found inside the chicken’s house, or sometimes in open ground. The owner may treat his birds with flea dusting powder in an attempt to control the infestation. A regular routine inspection of the chicken house and chickens is very important.

External parasites can be transmitted by wild birds, contact with infected chickens and rodents. As a result, implementing rules and regulations to inspect and to keep the chicken house clean will most likely guarantee a healthy and itch-free flock.

Although it is relatively simple to build a coop to keep chickens in from scratch, many people simply don’t have the carpentry skills and prefer to purchase chicken coop kits instead. Most chicken coop kits come with all the necessary materials required for constructing the perfect home in which their hens will be safe.

However before purchasing a chicken coop kit, keep in mind the size of the garden and number of chickens the coop will host.

In many areas, if the chicken coop takes up more than 50% of the garden, permission may be needed from local authorities before constructing. Each chicken needs at least 2 sq feet of space and larger breeds may need at least 4 to 5 sq feet of space.

Building a coop offers chickens a sheltered place to hide out from the harsh elements like rain, snow, heat and cold. A well built coop will also protect them from predators and ensure them healthy, comfortable life. In addition they will produce quality eggs in return.

A coop is a necessity for anyone raising chickens, and fortunately there are many different chicken coop designs available. Materials such as PVC pipes, tarps, converted old campers, have all actually been used for material for chicken coops, however wood is the safest and most common material for building chicken coops.

New lumber can be expensive to purchase, depending on the size of the coop: some second hand stores actually sell used lumbar that works just as good!

When farming chickens, either on a ranch or in one’s yard, the health of the chicken should be a high priority. Healthy, comfortable chicken’s product the best quality and the most delicious eggs, and ignoring the needs of the hens will certainly decrease the quality of the eggs. A good chicken coop will help keep the chickens healthy, and the eggs top-notch.

Chickens should not be exposed to harsh elements: they do not want to be too cold, too hot, and or to be wet and damp. Chickens that are penned in with only chicken wire will have to deal with all of these conditions, and are most likely to get sick.

In addition, chickens that have a poor coop structure run the risk of being injured or killed by hungry predators. Foxes, dogs, weasels, raccoons and other animals are all potentially of great danger to your chickens, which is why a properly built chicken coop is extremely important to the health of a chicken.
